  2. Unit 3
  3. 3.2 Design a Magazine Cover

3.2 Design a Magazine Cover

Completion requirements

For this assignment, you will get to appear on the front cover of a magazine! magazine

That is right, you will be creating the cover for a "lifestyle" magazine which features you on the cover. You will be using a title which is not used by any current magazines, though you can play on well-known titles. National Jacob or CosmoSarah are fine. National Geographic and Cosmopolitan are not. Your image will be central. This may be a photo or a drawing of you.

Your background cannot be solid white or black.

You must create all elements on the cover. You can't just grab images from online. If you modify existing images, they must pass the copyright test.

Your magazine cover must have the following elements:

• Masthead • Lead Article • Cost of issue • Issue/Volume number • Main image will be a photo of yourself • At least three cover lines

Consider the following:

  • It should be easy to read so think about appropriate font sizes
  • The title should be ALL CAPS
  • No other text should be all caps
  • Play around with the font in foreground/background
  • Try out other tools in Procreate which you haven't used yet.
  • Be Creative. Push your boundaries!

Step 1

Brainstorm ideas. Figure out who your audience is and what kind of content appears in your magazine.

Browse some magazine covers online.

Step 2

Sketch your cover out either on paper or in Procreate. Save your sketch.

Step 3

Review concepts of layout and composition (white space, alignment, etc...) as well as some of the fundamentals of design (colour, shape, form and line).

Step 4

Create any images that you will need in addition to your photo. Put it all together, working in layers. Play with a variety of configurations. Show it to others to see what they think.

Hand in your rough and good copies

Step 5

Write your reflection in which you describe your process, any difficulties, the reasons behind your choices, and the skills which you used to create this. Compose this reflection in the provided textbox.
