Unit 2 Project - Social Media

Completion requirements

For this project, you will be performing a social media analysis of three brands associated with a product that you are interested in. 

Social media just can't be ignored by graphic designers today. Successful designers also become masters of social media. You will want to be familiar with the major platforms which change constantly. You will need to make sure that your designs work from platform to platform. 

You will need to take notes at each step and you will be handing these in. 

Step 1

Choose the product type, then narrow this down to three brands. One should be at a local level, another at a national level, and the third at an international level. 

For example, you are into coffee shops, so you look at Beachcomber Coffee in Gibsons, Waves Coffee House (with stores across BC and Alberta) and Starbucks.  You will want to make sure that all three of your brands are active on social media.

Step 2

Identify platforms used. Each brand must use at least one. See which social media platforms they are linking to on their site. 

Step 3

Do a quick visual review of each. How does each look to you? Which kinds of images are used, how is text employed, which colours? What kinds of techniques do you see being employed? starbucks

Look at the hashtags used as well as descriptions in each post. 

Step 4

Which social media posts do you find appealing? and why? 

Which posts are the most popular? What is it that makes them effective in your view. 

Get a screenshot of these posts as you will need to include at least one from each brand in your report. 

Step 5

From your notes, you will write a report in which you present your findings. 

Divide your report into these sections:

  • Introduction (product, brands, platforms)
  • Local brand
  • National brand
  • International brand
  • Overview - What you noticed about what type of branding you like and what seems to get attention.
