4.1 Designing a banner

Completion requirements
Scenario

A local organic farm has secured a contract to sell fresh fruit at the Vancouver Folk Festival. They have asked you to design a banner or sign which can last for four days outside while exposed to rain, wind and sun. They expect this to be a one-shot deal so they don't anticipate needing this banner again. This farm promotes itself as meeting goals for sustainability.

You will need to write them an email in which you tell them what their options are for this banner/sign. You will need to include the following information:

  • Materials which the item can be made from. You will need to include the material which this can be printed on as well as any inks or other printing materials. You will also need to include any materials which might be needed to fasten it to their fruit stall.
  • You will comment upon the life-cycle of the materials. Can this sign be repurposed later and how? Can it be made from recyclable materials? If so, how will they recycle it?
  • Are there any options for making the banner out of non-toxic materials?
  • Tell your client how you can ship this banner to Vancouver in the most ethical manner, considering energy use and overall carbon footprint.

Format this so that it looks and sounds like an email from a graphic design firm to a client. Remember that you will need to explain the customer's options as well as the trade-offs of each one.
